Rock Ridge girls slip by Mesabi East

Rock Ridge's Ava Fink just edges past Mesabi East's Elli Thel to take first in the 100 meter dash during Wednesday's Subsection 7A meet in Aurora.

AURORA — The Rock Ridge girls track and field team edged out Mesabi East by four and a half points to claim their first subsection title Wednesday as area athletes competed for a spot at next week’s section championships.

The Wolverines won the meet with 112 points while the Giants were just behind them with 107.50. Athletes from Ely, Mountain Iron-Buhl, Chisholm and Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin also advanced to next week’s finals.

The top seven athletes in each event plus the top four relays in each relay event punched their tickets for next week’s finals.

Rock Ridge was led by sprinter Ava Fink, who won both the 100 meter dash (13.36) and the 200 meter dash (27.85), aiding the Wolverines on their subsection title hunt.

Mesabi East had numerous wins on the day with Lindsey Baribeau claiming the 400 meter dash title (1:03.49) and Aubree Skelton winning the 800 meter run crown (2:28.14).

Mountain Iron-Buhl was led by sisters Liz and Kate Nelson, who finished first and second respectively in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. In the 1600, Liz was first with a time of 5:33.79 while Kate was second at 5:34.00. In the 3200, Liz won again with a time of 12:13.76 while Kate finished just behind her with a time of 12:14.04.

The Giants were also successful in the relays, winning three of the four and taking second in the only one they didn’t win. In the 4x100 meter relay, Hannah Hannuksela, Kora Forsline, Kailey Fossell and Elli Theel won the event with a time of 51.63.

In the 4x200 relay, Hannuksela, Forsline, Baribeau and Kiarra Moehlenbrock took first with a time of 1:49.08. The Giants also won the first race of the meet in the 4x800 with Moehlenbrock, Lydia Skelton, Baribeau, Forsline putting down a time of 10:24.00.

Chisholm was led by Tresa Baumgard in the high jump. The freshman jumped an event-best five feet, beating out her closest competitor by two inches.

Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin was led by Emmalee Oviatt, who won the shot put with a mark of 35 feet, two inches.

Area teams had numerous runner-up finishes on the day, including Rock Ridge’s Elli Jankila who took second in the triple jump with a best jump of 32 feet, 7.75 inches and Maggie Landwer in the pole vault (8-00). Mesabi East’s Theel was second best on the day in the 100 meter dash, finishing with a time of 13.44.

Mesabi East also finished second in the 4x400 relay with Moehlenbrock, Lydia Skelton, Baribeau and Kora Forsline recording a time of 4:21.71.

Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin’s 4x800 team also finished as subsection runners-up with Emma Williams, Lola Champlin, Claire Clusiau and Baylie Norris qualifying for sections with a time of 10:41.60.

Ely was led by Annika Mattson’s third place finish in the 400 meter dash (1:05.21), Ande Visser’s bronze medal performance in the discus throw (96-01) and Zoe Devine’s third best effort in the 3200 meter run (12:56.18). Ely also finished third in the 4x800 relay with Sarah Visser, Gracie Pointer, Phoebe Helms and Devine stopping the clock at 10:45.80.

Finishing with third place results for Rock Ridge were Jennie Krause in the 100 meter dash (13.92), Jankila in the long jump (15-02.75) and Ella Lamppa in the triple jump (31-10.50). Rock Ridge also took third in the 4x100 meter relay (Landwer, Jankila, Krause, Fink; 52.94) and the 4x400 meter relay (Landwer, Jankila, Abby Crum, Lamppa; 4:40.25).

Mesabi East saw third place finishes from Moehlenbrock in the 100 meter hurdles (17.84) and the high jump (4-08) as well as from Hannah Baker in the shot put (30-07.50).

Chisholm’s Hailey Johnson took third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.19. GNK’s Champlin was third in the 800 meter run (2:43.67) while her teammate Williams took third in the 1600 meter run (5:37.93).
