EVELETH — Richard Mervich’s favorite saying finally came true last week — in a very big way.
“It’s a matter of when — not if — I’m going to win something,” the Eveleth man was fond of saying.
Well, how about $1 million. That’s what he won in the Minnesota State Lottery Powerball during the Aug. 31 drawing, when his quick-pick ticket matched those drawn that night.
The winning numbers were 2-7-25-40-56, with the Powerball number 20. The ticket was sold at the Eveleth Short Stop at 410 Grant Ave.
The morning following the Saturday night drawing, Mervich went to run some errands and decided to check the Hot Lotto and Powerball tickets he had bought the night before.
When he checked the Powerball ticket, a message told him to claim the prize at the Lottery office in Roseville, Minn. He had a clerk check his ticket against winning numbers.
“She told me I matched the first five white numbers. I grabbed the ticket and looked at it and thought, ‘I won $200,000!’ I didn’t believe it,” Mervich said.
But a friend called him that night and said he believed the first five numbers was a $1 million ticket. He checked the back of the ticket that proved his friend to be correct.
When Mervich claimed his prize on Thursday, he said with a hearty laugh, “When I woke up this morning, I felt like a million bucks!”
